The Land Rover Freelander was Land Rover's entry-level compact SUV, produced from 1997 to 2014, and the brand's best-selling model during much of its production run. The 1st generation Freelander (L314, 1997-2006) was notable for being the first unibody Land Rover and for its Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) system that allowed it to disengage the rear axle on-road. The 2nd generation Freelander 2 (L359, 2006-2014) used a 2.2L TDCI diesel (150-190 hp) or 3.2L Si6 petrol (233 hp), and offered Hill Descent Control as standard. The Freelander 2 was sold in China as the Land Rover LR2 and formed the basis for the Freelander's successor, the Discovery Sport. Despite its discontinuation, the Freelander 2 remains popular in Europe and Africa as a reliable secondhand entry into Land Rover ownership.
