What GLS 500 Denotes

The GLS-Class is Mercedes-Benz's flagship full-size SUV, positioned above the smaller GLE and GLC models as the brand's three-row luxury SUV. Trim numbers like 500 have historically indicated engine displacement or power class within the range, alongside other variants such as 350, 450, 550, and 600, with AMG 63 sitting at the top of the performance ladder.

Fitment Across GLS Generations

Tailgate curvature differs between the X166 and X167 generations, so confirm your exact generation and year when ordering to ensure the backing plate matches.

Materials and Mounting

Chrome ABS lettering on a resin backing plate, applied with automotive-grade adhesive. We also offer a satin black option for a blacked-out rear badge on darker exterior colors.

Before You Order

Confirm your GLS generation, whether you want the exact "500" wording or a different trim number, and your preferred finish.

Common Fitment Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent error is ordering without specifying the GLS generation, since the X166 and X167 tailgates have noticeably different curvature and mounting hole placement. It is also worth confirming your desired trim wording precisely, since "500", "550", and "580" designations have been used at different points and can be easy to mix up when ordering from memory.

Installation and Care

Clean the tailgate surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, position the badge using reference marks or existing mounting points, and press firmly along its full length, allowing at least 24 hours to cure before washing. Ongoing care is straightforward: hand wash, avoid high-pressure jets directed straight at the edges, and check periodically for lifting after temperature extremes.

Why a Custom Badge Instead of a Generic Reproduction

GLS tailgate curvature has changed between the X166 and X167 generations, so a one-size reproduction can leave gaps or sit unevenly. Building to order lets us match your specific generation, produce the exact trim number you want, and finish it to match the rest of your SUV's trim.
